INSPIRING LIVES WITHOUT SIGHT!

The 9th edition of Run For Light (RFL) – Inspiring Lives Without Sight, is scheduled to debut at the scenic Pasir Ris Park on 30 Mar 2024, Saturday at 1700 hrs. And for the 9th consecutive time, this is also in support of Guide Dogs Singapore Ltd (GDS).

The annual run event will kick off with the symbolic 1KM blindfold walk led by guide dogs & the GDS team and participants followed by 5KM fun run and 10KM competitive run. Top 5 fastest 10KM men and women finishers walk away with fabulous prizes and trophies.

It has always been RFL’s goal since inception to see our community coming together to support the plight of the visually challenged individuals through our series of campaign and roadshow leading up to the event.

To make the 9th edition all the more special, Run For Light participants will get the chance to break the Singapore Book of Records for the largest resistance band demonstration which currently stands at 1,220 on event day. Be part of the record breaking contingent, let’s do it!

FAQs

Question 1 – I understand the 1KM blindfold walk involves two persons to a team. I have not participated in the blindfold walk before, how do we do it?

Answer: As this walk involves two persons in a team, a blindfold then will be given to each team. On day of event, one person will be blindfolded while the other member of the team who is sighted will assist him or her during the walk. At half-way mark, the role will be switched for the return leg.

Question 2 – I can’t run but I am keen to participate. Can I walk?

Answer: Of course, you can walk or run at your own leisure pace. The 5KM is a fun run category and even for the competitive 10KM category, walking is still allowed too. The key is to have fun and enjoy the activities. Everyone is a winner once they cross the finish line.

Question 3 – Is 5KM Fun Run category a timed race?

Answer: No, there is no timing for 5KM which is a fun run category. Race bib for this category without timing chip will be given. Timing chip for 10KM bib, which is a competitive race is given.

Question 4 – Must I complete before I get a race medal?

Answer: Yes, participate in our physical event be it 1KM blindfold walk, 5KM or 10KM run and upon crossing the finish line, a race medal will then be presented.

Question 5 – Is there a minimum sign up age?

Answer: The minimum sign up age for 1KM blindfold walk and 5KM fun run is 8-year-old. Kids of this age must be accompanied by an adult who must be aged 18 and above. For 10KM competitive run, only those who are aged 14-year-old and above are allowed.

Question 6 – Are there podium winners in the 10KM competitive race?

Answer: Top 5 fastest 10KM finishers in the men’s and women’s category will walk away with prizes and trophies. Those who are aiming for podium places are reminded to line up among the first wave runners as winners are identified based on their gun times.

Question 7 – How do I get my race entitlement?

Answer: All race entitlements will be mailed out via courier service at least 2 weeks prior to the event. Participants must ensure to provide full addresses including postal code at time of sign up so that race entitlements are delivered.

Question 8 – Is Run For Light a charity run event?

Answer: No, it is not a charity run event. It is very much a profit-centric event in order to maintain it as an annual event since inception in 2015. However, as part of corporate social responsibility (CSR), it helps to create public awareness for the visually impaired community as well as the key functions of guide dogs here.

Question 9 – How do I participate in the record-breaking resistance band demonstration?

Answer: This is opened to all Run For Light participants on event day. Participants will arrive at least half an hour before the official commencement of the event. A resistance band will be issued on the spot before moving in the workout zone. A proper count is needed once you have moved into the zone. Our instructors will lead the 15-minute workout using the resistance band. There are officials from Singapore Book of Records who will observe the entire proceeding and a final decision will be made if the record has been broken.
